When we perform music…

is it the composer we’re celebrating? Are we glorifying the angelic architecture of Bach and letting others hear it, and maybe for the first time?

is it the performer we’re celebrating? Ourselves? The fact that we can perform these daring musical feats on stage with many eyeing us down? That we have this wonderful gift of creativity and are generous enough to share it?

is it music we’re celebrating? Do we kneel at the altar of music every time we play? Do we genuflect at music’s potency to celebrate humanity every time we play?

It could be one of these things, all of these things, none of these things. But one thing is for certain.

We should ask ourselves why we perform music in the first place.
