Everybody Wins

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines competition as the “active demand by two or more organisms or kinds of organisms for some environmental resource in short supply”.

What are battle of the bands and music competitions? What are the environmental resources in short supply? Recognition, future gigs, and money?

I don’t think music is based on this scarcity but abundance: the abundance of music’s humanity of connecting with other humans on a human level.

And people admit this when they go to these battles and competitions. More often than not they want the opportunity to share their music with others and connect with the music and ideas of others. Winning is secondary.

So why does there have to be winners and losers in music? With the abundance music brings, doesn’t everyone win?
