Classical music can be a lot like those families who obsess over their lineage. They spend plenty of money looking into the family tree, where our great great great great grandfather came from, and what the family crest looked like.
It’s important to know where we come from. It shouldn’t, however, be at the detriment of those around us. Composers today need the support and love too. They shouldn’t feel that they are competing with Bach and Mozart.
We should support them with our interest in their work, whether that be in commission, money for a concert or coffee, or friendship.
Composers today aren’t making art in the shadow of the greats. No, they are making art as part of that lineage.
