The strands of relations one can gain from music can seem staggeringly infinite. One gig can lead to getting to know dozens of people and going to events with these people can lead to getting to know dozens of people ad infinitum!
While staggering I think it’s more of an issue of quality and quantity. We might get to know some of these people who invite us to play at one concert but after that we’re done with them, looking to the next person to “network with”. That can leave us without developing deep and sincere relationships.
Music isn’t in the networking business, it’s in the connecting business: connecting people through the humanity brought out of the music.
Perhaps it isn’t just worrying about how to get to the next gig but about treating others like humans worthy of connection, not means to a gig or money from merch.
