There’s a lot we do to music: tons of practice to get the phrasing just right, restless nights to get the lyrics of our songs to match our inner feelings.
But what does music do for us?
This question especially rings out when it seems like music itself causes us bitterness or sadness: we have a terrible performance, we can’t seem to get our tone just right, none of our songs seem to stand out. What does music do for us then?
It’s during these times of frustration more than the joys that we have to dig deep and answer this question for ourselves. I don’t think there’s a one size fits all answer. Maybe this question never gets answered in a life time of music making. Maybe along the way we get glimpses of the the truth, the answer.
First thing is first though. If we want to get anywhere we have to ask ourselves the unanswered question…
What does music do for us?
