Good drivers make us comfortable. They’re in control and we don’t have to worry about crashing anytime soon.
Bad drivers are the complete opposite. They’re out of control and we are on edge all the time, ready to genuflect and kiss the pavement as soon as we exit the vehicle.
Perhaps a good musician is like that. Even in her most virtuosic and athletic passages she is in control and we are comforted by that. We can enjoy the music as we enjoy the view or the conversation as the passenger in a car.
It is when these passages get frantic and hasty that we become nervous ourselves and wonder if she’ll take us to the end of the work in the one piece.
A musician being a good driver makes the audience a happy passenger.
