Being a musician is a lot like being a traveler.
Each piece we play is like a city unto itself. It has its own language, customs, and culture that we have to take into account. Once we understand the language we can branch out to other towns within that country, starting to understand it as a whole. Soon after we leave for a different country and start the process all over again.
There are plenty of moments of culture shock as we learn music we aren’t used to and uncomfortable with. But out of these moments we can widen our horizons, becoming better musicians and more open and courageous explorers.
