Deserve?

I’m spoiling Unforgiven here, but right before Eastwood is about to finish off Hackman, Hackman’s character, a sheriff that is in the middle of building a house and a memoir, says he doesn’t deserve to die on the floor of a dingy bar. Eastwood’s response floored me…

“Deserve’s got nothing to do with it”.

You get the gig while other equally if not more talented bands don’t?

“Deserve’s got nothing to do with it”.

Another band gets the gig while you, equally if not more talented, don’t?

“Deserve’s got nothing to do with it”.

Being a good musician is just one part of the equation. Musical proficiency doesn’t mean that you deserve all of the opportunities.

Success also shouldn’t inflate our perceptions of ourselves. Someone just as well could have got the big break you did.

And that’s okay. There is luck. Deserve’s got nothing to do with it, but gratefulness, generosity, and being a good person does.
