Mistaking the Scene for the Play

The term “music scene” seems so exclusive. As if the musical community one is a part of is it. As if it is vacuum sealed.

Alban Berg once said good music is good music. Well, let’s stretch it: a good music community is a good music community. There are tons of great things happening in “scenes” of all walks of music.

Classical musicians can lean from the DIY aesthetic of punk. Punk musicians can learn from the sense of love and respect for history from classical musicians. We should take the good from any and everyone who is involved with music.

An ideal scene isn’t a scene at all. It isn’t one scene from a play. It is the entire play.
